What is Somatic Coaching?
Somatic coaching simply provides another tool in the coaching toolkit to help clients access deeper levels of information held by the body (the soma) to create new and creative solutions to issues and challenges.
We are so used to calling upon the thinking brain to solve our problems. However, past emotional and mental traumas are stored in the body in many ways and can often have long-term effects as simple as everyday aches and pains or low energy to more devastating outcomes such as disease and the physical breakdown of bones, joints, muscles and organs. Somatic coaching acknowledges that the body can hold answers to our healing if we only ask.
Why Somatic Coaching?
As a professionally trained, certified life coach, I honor my clients and their innate ability to get access to information that will lead to their own solutions. For example, a large percentage of my practice in the past has focused on career coaching.
Many people come to me wanting to change careers and seek my assistance. I do believe every one of us knows at the deepest level what we are meant to do but we block ourselves from accepting this answer.
Perhaps a parent or loved one told us it was a stupid idea or that we could never make money at it. Many times, we assign labels to our career choices like good or bad, moral or immoral, good or evil. Or we simply worry about what other people would think of us.
Coaching can help us to identify and dismantle these blocks. In addition to engaging with clients in what I can intentional dialogue, I have always integrated a physical component to my coaching style. My clients get up out of their chair and move around. I create physical environments for my clients to interact with. I have always believed in the power of movement to activate the brain to begin thinking differently.
A foundation of my own coaching education was based on the principles of neurolinguistic programming, or NLP. In addition to the language (linguistics) aspect of NLP, there is a physicality to it that has always excited me.
Additional professional development in Conversational Intelligence and exposure to the works of Richard Strozzi (his book, Somatic Coaching, is a classic) and Bessel van der Kolk's book, The Body Keeps The Score, has convinced me that Somatic Coaching can have a profound, liberating effect on my clients.
What can I expect from Somatic Coaching?
A session is usually 60-90 minutes in length. After completing a session intake form indicating whatever issues you may be facing and where in your body you might be experiencing pain or other sensations, we'll engage in a brief coaching session to help me better tailor the rest of your treatment during the session.
I use a variety of somatic coaching methods to help my clients. These might include movement, therapeutic touch (always with your permission) and other hands-on methods. You may lay on a heated table to receive some of these treatments. I am certified as a Reiki master. Reiki is an energy modality that uses a light or no-touch placement of my hands on different parts of the body to move energy to release it.
